Peter spent 44 years in the US Lighthouse Service, ten years as an assistant and 34 years as head keeper. He was born in 1870 to Peter and Rose Ann (Lelonde) Richards of Ontario, Canda. His family moved to Huron County in 1887. Peter married Irene Stella Beckwith and they had four children who were raised at the lighthouse: Peter F., Leland ("Bud"), Meredith B. (Babe) and Dorothy, who was actually born at the lighthouse. Upon Peter Richards retirement in 1939 they moved to a home on Main Street in the village of Port Hope, MI.
