 In August of 2001, talk started about forming a society
to take care of the lighthouse. Those involved were Captain Ron
Burkhard, Glenn Willis, and Richard Crisman. After much planning,
publicity in the press, and support from Steve Romzek, (Huron County
Parks Superintendent) Captain Ronald and Judy Burkhard founded the
society. On April 13, 2002 the first meeting was held, the Charter
Members were: Capt. Ron and Judy Burkhard, Steve Romzek, Dave and Dana
Miller, David A. Mc Donald, and Linda Bonkowski.
We have established our Articles of Incorporation and are a
non-profit organization with the mission to preserve and restore this
lighthouse as the jewel of Huron County.
There are two museums housed in the lighthouse. The
Thumb Underwater Preserve covering all the history and shipwrecks
of Lake Huron and the historical museum of the Pointe aux
Barques Lighthouse and Lifesaving Station.

Our goal is to have the lighthouse restored to the late 1800's
or early 1900 era. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was
stripped of all its artifacts when the Coast Guard decommissioned
the Keepers in 1957. The Display and Procurement Committee
is currently searching for articles to furnish the lighthouse
with the United States Coast Guard and through individuals
in the area. If any individual or business would like
to help preserve history, please contact the Chairperson,
Judy Valentine.
The Thumb Underwater Preserve Museum is in much better shape with
many artifacts that have been donated or placed on loan with the
society. This display currently can be reviewed in our website.
Our members come from all over the United States with many
relatives from the previous Keepers of the Light that served from 1848
- 1957.
